Will the board mtg be recorded?
What is the timing on the decision for Fall?
Cris de la Torre
Will we be allowed on campus this summer?
What are key strategies to create a virtual environment conducive to student learning?
Can we get into our offices before finals to get materials and books needed to finish the term, and prep for the fall?
Will the university receive any federal bail out funds as to bridge this period?
Students are very concerned about the uncertainty of an online fall. Can you please give us some guidance about what to say to students about the possibility of being online in the fall?
Where might we stand on proceeding with student travel at the end of July/early August? Could we possibly take students to academic conferences if they are still being held?
I think it'd good to acknowledge that we're expecting faculty to prepare two different delivery modes for their fall courses over the summer. That's a fair bit of additional work...
I may have missed this, but what are the contingency plans should faculty members become ill while they are teaching the remainder of the spring semester, this summer, or the fall.
For summer and potentially Fall, will more technical/equipment be available? I need a big monitor...
Regarding the potential for online only course delivery in the fall, what plans will there be regarding project or performance classes that do not translate to online format?
to add to Donn’s question. what about heavy equipment classes. that the students can not have access to.
CETL and IT have been great---the "walk in" ability to attend a webinar has really been helpful---
Question for tomorrow: when prioritizing spending, is the priority to fill vacated positions or to deliver faculty salary increases? perhaps, neither in this situation, but curious on priority?
What are you telling incoming first-year students regarding on-campus living requirements?
How will faculty be prepared to assist with social emotional learning of students in the fall? (IE: this year’s HS seniors will have a BIG transition)
Are all open positions frozen and will these be folded into current remaining faculty workload?
Depression and anxiety are sky high. How will counseling services be ready for the fall?
What are your strategies for managing information If the information climate remains volatile?
I appreciate the mindful approach UNC leadership is taking towards reopening. Even if the governor allows campus to reopen, my hope is that faculty and students are provided the option to continue in an on-line capacity in the fall. This would be particularly important for those who directly interact with/support the elderly and immunocompromised.
Q for Mark: any update on the plan for the other Dean searches?
Not about getting into office - about procurement - and high speed internet?
Thank you, Mark :)
Do you foresee a large reduction via layoffs in the number of adjunct and contract renewable faculty over the next year?
Is it possible for faculty to use classroom technology to deliver on line?
please address faculty furloughs and payouts that we are seeing at peer institutions
Kris Heintz Nelson
Are we able to get access to our canvas course shells for fall? I was told 120 days before the start.
please address faculty furloughs and *paycuts that we are seeing at peer institutions
What guidance should we be giving to students who are attempting to compete their internship experience this summer, particularly for those students who planned on completing their internship through an on-campus site, such as athletics, the University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute (UNCCRI), etc.? Should these students be told that all on-campus internships are canceled?
Thank you, Mark!
If we would have to go to all online format for the fall, would athletics be cancelled for the year (and if so, would there be cost savings, and how would students with athletics scholarships be supported)?
Will furloughs and layoffs be across the board as we've seen with recent rounds of cuts- or more strategic and targeted and potentially forward-looking?
Great question Jeremy - assuming there is some relaxing of social distancing, I think we can look at ways of providing those experiences in small group setting. We need to get guidance from the state on what we can and cannot do
are we planning to sustain our sports program during this crisis?
Mark, so what should we tell students at this point?
How would that affect contract-renewable faculty who are contracted for 10 months but paid over a year long period...?
Also what about people that don't qualify for support services?
Social/emotional support for students in the fall? Especially if we are online? Depression/anxiety are high.
UNCO need to have a clear definition what they mean by Online format. One of my biggest struggle is when UNCO says online and my supervisor says distance learning type. Distance learning does not work especially for Graduate program when our students are from all over America. It’s almost impossible to set a time to appease eastern time to pacific time. Why can’t all courses be only Online rather than different description or invention of unproven methods. This will clear up many confusion of how our classes should be taught.
Jeremy, Right now we should refer to the governor's social distancing requirements but prepare for how we could do this in a small group environment. I think we should be honest with students that we don't know at the moment, but are planning for those opportunities and experiences within the restrictions that we are working under
There is a concern about exam proctoring with an online teaching/learning environment. I was wondering if there has been any discussion about it.
Are there significant savings from energy, water, etc., now that the building are empty?
I would agree with Bryon's point---we cannot implement synchronous experiences with students in many of our grad programs who are very geographically diverse---we need to be online and asynchronous, with synchronous being an option if it works, but not in any way mandated
I echo Kyle's question: Will furloughs and layoffs be across the board as we've seen with recent rounds of cuts- or more strategic and targeted and potentially forward-looking?
When do you expect to make decisions regarding furloughs and decisions regarding contract-renewable faculty?
Cuts hit each college equally and all admins were laid off- this is what I was referring to
Will this impact decisions on those who are in the middle of the tenure review process?
There are online proctoring features in Canvas
What about offered G.A. and T.A. positions for our incoming grad students? Many of them are counting on them to attend grad school at UNC.
I think Charles means those of us who dossiers under review currently.
That is what I mean Nicholas
Are current faculty searches going forward?
We have all showed concern and made adjustments for students who have become ill during the Pandemic (including P/F policy), but I wish we heard some equal concern about faculty who may fall ill. I realize we are fortunate to have healthcare and disability, but it is not easy to have a "substitute" for college classes. It would just be nice to hear that there is some concern and flexibility in this regard.
Has enrollment in Extended Campus programs changed? And will EC programming be considered in looking at furloughs and layoffs?
Thanks, Pepper, also follow up regarding GA / TA offers. If we lose faculty positions, will GA and TAs be utilized to fill the gap and if so, will we increase stipends?
I would like to hear about plans for extended campus programs and coordinating.
I would appreciate hearing the answers to many of these questions, so hopefully the replies will be sent to all in attendance perhaps? Thanks
Exam proctoring...can you address whether the university is considering software options that keep students from navigating away from a canvas exam to another program.
Are contract renewable faculty vulnerable for this fall?
Jeremy, we are considering many different options on proctoring - but need to be mindful of the expense given our budget situation
Since almost all meetings are public, would it make sense to send links to faculty/staff, even if just on request?
Thanks, Stan, we appreciate your leadership as well.
Kris Heintz Nelson
Thank you Stan, Andy, and Mark
Thank you for hosting this!
I second Deanna Meinke’s comment. Thank you
Thanks for taking the time to chat about these issues.
